This Week’s Focus: Reflection
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening—depending on what time you’re reading this.
Welcome to another Mindful Monday! I’m so glad to have you here, whether you’re returning or this is your first time joining us.
Over the past week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of reflection and taking the time to admire how far we’ve come.
I know a lot of us are guilty of being extremely hard on ourselves. We tend to focus on everything we need to improve, everything we haven’t accomplished yet, and every mistake we’ve made along the way.
But how often do we stop and acknowledge everything we’ve already overcome?
We get so caught up in what’s going wrong that we forget to look at everything that’s going right.
Think about it.
There was a version of you who prayed for some of the things you have today. There was a version of you who didn’t know how you were going to make it through certain situations—and yet, somehow, you did.
You made it here.
That deserves to be acknowledged.
Your mindset has a huge impact on how you experience life. If you’re constantly expecting the worst, allowing every inconvenience to throw you off, or being your own biggest critic, eventually that negativity starts to affect how you feel day to day.
I’m not saying you have to walk around pretending everything is perfect. Life isn’t perfect, and neither are we.
But sometimes we become so focused on what needs to change that we forget to appreciate the person we’ve already become.
That’s where reflection comes in.
Reflection allows us to celebrate how far we’ve come while also recognizing the areas that still need a little more water and sunshine.
It gives us a chance to look at our experiences and ask ourselves:
What did this teach me?
What have I learned about myself?
What do I want to do differently moving forward?
Sometimes when it feels like we’re stuck in a cycle we can’t escape, it’s because we’re continuing to make the same choices. Growth starts with honesty. Reflection gives us the opportunity to learn from our experiences instead of simply repeating them.
I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately.
As I begin this new journey in my life, I’ve made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t bring every old habit into this new chapter. I want to grow into the person I’ve always known I could become, and growth requires being honest with ourselves—even when it’s uncomfortable.
I’ve had to look at certain parts of myself and ask, “Is this something I want to carry with me?”
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes it’s no.
And sometimes, we don’t know yet.
That’s okay too.
Change can feel overwhelming.
New places.
 New people.
New opportunities.
New beginnings.
They’re all scary.
But they’re scary because you’ve never experienced them before.
Don’t let the fear of the unknown convince you that you’re not capable of becoming the person you’re meant to be.
Take the risk.
Trust the process.
Stay patient.
Stay consistent.
Stay positive.
And most importantly, give yourself credit along the way.
Before today ends, I have one favor to ask.
Take just five minutes for yourself.
Put your phone down.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Think about where you were a year ago, six months ago, or even just a few months ago.
Ask yourself:
What have I overcome?
What am I proud of myself for?
What is something I handled better than I would have in the past?
What is one thing I want to work on moving forward?
Don’t just focus on what you need to fix.
Take a moment to admire yourself, too.
Celebrate the small wins. Celebrate the lessons. Celebrate the moments when you kept going even when you didn’t feel like it.
You don’t have to have everything figured out today.
Healing isn’t a race.
Growth isn’t linear.
Some Mondays will feel heavier than others, and that’s okay.
Just promise yourself you’ll keep showing up.
And when you look back, I hope you can recognize that the person you are today is someone your past self would be proud of.
Until next Monday, remember:
You are loved.
You are cared for.
You belong here.
